Kylmien päivien kotitossut - Warm home booties

Nyt kun on ollut tosi kylmä, niin villasukatkaan ei riitä pitämään jalkoja lämpimänä.

Onneksi löysin vahingossa lasten kenkiä etsiessä omat vanhat talvikengät vintistä. Nää on jotkut valeuggsit, mutta kuitenkin aitoa nahkaa. Ihan mielettömän lämpimät kotikäytössä! Suosittelen lämpimästi ulkokenkiä sisäkengiksi kylmillä säillä. Eikä sukat kastu, jos astuu vahingossa lasten läikyttämiin maito-, vesi- tai kiisselilammikoihin.

Now when it has been freezing, even wool socks can't keep your feet warm enough. 

Luckily, by accident, I found my old winter boots from the attic when I was looking for some kids' winter boots. They are some fake-uggs, but they are real leather. Just insanely warm in home use! I highly recommend using outdoor boots indoors in cold weather. And your socks won't get wet if you step on a milk-, water- or pudding-poddle that kids have spilt.

Koukkukynttelikkö - The candle chandelier

Ostin Mosa Interiorista ihanan koukkuhärvelin.

Tää on aivan mahtava. Oli tosi kiva heti miettiä mitä tähän laittaisin. Parasta tässä on, että tää ei oo pelkästään joulujuttu, vaan vähän niinku vaihtuva näyttely. Ja kynttilät on turvallisen korkealla (jos kukaan ei heittele leluja).

Monet mun asetelmista yleensä roikkuu jostain. Tää on ihan käytännön sanelema juttu. Kaikki mun pöydille tai muille tasoille laittamani jutut lähtevät kävelemään. Kiitos mun pienimmän, mikään ei saa olla missään.

I bought a lovely hook chandelier from Mosa Interior. 

It's awesome. It was fun to think about what to put in it. The best thing with this is that it's not just a Christmas thing. It works around the year as a changing exhibition. The candles are also safely up high (if nobody throws any toys).

Most of my visual displays hang somewhere. This is for the practicality. Everything I put on the table tops walks away from them. Thanks to my smallest boy, nothing stays where I put it. 

Paperitähtivimma - Paper star mania

Innostuin tekemään paperitähtiä. Aaagh!

Ekaa kertaa tätä mallia kokeilin ja heti lähti homma lapasesta. Tää on ihan hirveen koukuttavaa. Vihdoin hyvä kohde vanhoille skräppäyspapereille. Kokeilin tehdä muutaman myös vanhan kirjan sivuilla. Niistä tuli aivan ihania.

Näitä vaan tulee ja tulee. En pysty lopettamaan.

Pojatkin innostui tekemään. Kahdeksanvuotias jaksoi yllättävän hyvin keskittyä taittelemaan ja liimaamaan.

I was inspired to make some paper stars. Ugh! 

I tried this model for the first time and it immediately got out of hands. This is SO addictive. Finally a good use for old scrapping papers. I also made a few of the pages of an old book. They turned out lovely.

These just keep on coming. I can't stop making them.

The boys also wanted to try. My eight-year-old focused so well on folding and glueing that I was all surprised.

Kyltti ja Jouluvaloja - A sign and some Christmas lights

Jee marraskuu!

Jouluvalokausi on virallisesti alkanut. Ainaki mä rupeen kaipaamaan pieniä tuikkivia valoja heti pyhäinpäivän jälkeen. Ne on niin ihania tässä pimeydessä.

Näissä kuvissa näkyy myös yksi mun tekemistä kylteistä. Se on kyllä vähän valheellinen... ei meillä ollu viime viikolla siistiä. Ehkä viime vuosikymmenellä? Siivouksen jälkeen koti pysyy siistinä ehkä puoli tuntia. Sit on taas vaatteita ja leluja ympäriinsä. Ja kaikki sohvatyynyt valtavana pomppuratana.


Yippee, November! 

Christmas light season has officially started. I for one will start to miss the little twinkling lights right after halloween. They are so lovely in this darkness.

These pictures also show one of the signs I made. It's a bit false though... our house wasn't clean last week. Maybe last decade? After cleaning our home stays clean for about a half an hour. Soon there are clothes and toys all over. Also all the cushions from the couches form a giant bouncing track.

I twisted a string light around an old willow heart. This is in our porch window.  

Pipo villapaidasta - Wool sweater beanie

Flunssa iski ja joudun jumittamaan kotona.

Ärsyttävää olla sairaana. Remonttia ei pysty tekemään ja tanssitreenit jää väliin. Onneks mies vei isommat pojat uimahalliin ja mulle jäi tänne vaan pienin nukkumaan päikkäreitä. Saan oikeesti lepoa ja rauhaa. Nyt kun en pysty riehumaan remontin kimpussa, niin hyödynsin tän pienen rauhanhetken kevyeen ompeluprojektiin.

Tää on tilaustyö. Tarkoituksena on tehdä vanhasta liian pienestä villapaidasta pipo ja pitkävartiset kynsikkäät.

I've got a flu and I'm stuck at home. 

It's annoying to be sick. I can't do any house renovations and I couldn't go to my dance practice. Luckily my hubby took the bigger boys to swimming hall and I'm here at home accompanied only by my smallest boy who's taking his nap. I'm really getting some peace and quiet. Now, when I can't tackle any renovation issues, I took advantage of this little moment of peace and did an easy sewing project.

This was ordered from me. I'm supposed to make a wool hat and hand warmers out of an old sweater.

Pipon kaava:
 Mittaa päänympärys, jaa se kahtia ja miinusta kaksi senttiä. Esim. 56cm päänympäryksellä kaavan leveys on 26cm. Ota lautanen, jonka halkaisija on sama kuin kaavan leveys ja piirrä sen avulla ympyrä paperin alakulmaan. Taita piirretty ympyrä "pituussuunnassa" kahtia ja piirrä suora viiva ympyrän reunasta paperin alareunaan kuvassa näkyvällä tavalla. Mittaa ja piirrä ympyrän yläreunaan halkio. Leikkaa kaava irti. Halkion reunat kannattaa leikata hieman kaareviksi.

The beanie pattern:
Measure the head circumference, divide with two and take off two centimeters. For example, with 56cm head circumference the pattern width is 26cm. Take a plate of which diameter is the same as the pattern width and draw a circle to the lower corner of the paper. Fold the paper in half "lengthwise" and draw a straight line from the side of the circle to the lower side of the paper, as in the picture. Measure and draw a slit to the upper side of the circle. Cut the pattern. The slit edges should be cut slightly curved.

Käänsin paidan nurin ja leikkasin kaavan avulla pipon yläreunan. Jätin paidan oman resorin taittovaraksi.
Ompelin leikatun reunan.
I turned the sweater inside out and cut the upper side of the wool beanie with the pattern.
I left the sweater's ribbing for folding. Then I sew the cutted line.

Leikkasin halkion.
I cut the slit.

Asetin halkion reunat vastakkain ja ompelin.
I set the slit edges against each other and sew.

Valmis.
Done.

Kynsikkäitä varten leikkasin paidan hihat vaan poikki, tein peukaloille reiät
ja ompelin kaikki leikkuureunat siksakilla.
For the hand warmers I just cut the sleeves, made holes for the thumbs
and finished all the cut edges using a zigzag stitch.

Origami-valosarja - Origami light garland

Tästä valosarjaideasta tykkään tosi paljon.

Aion toteuttaa tän uudestaan tänä vuonna. (Tää edellinen koki kohtalon lasten käsissä.) Tekemiseen tarvitaan vain origamipapereita 15x15 cm ja led-valosarja.

Origamikuutiot taitellaan vesi-ilmapallotekniikalla, puhalletaan auki ja sitten vaan työnnetään valosarjan lamppu puhallusaukosta sisään. Mulla nää on pysyny ihan hyvin kasassa, jos eivät ole joutuneet pienten lasten käsiin.


I like this light garland idea very much.

I'm gonna do it again this year. (This previous one met its faith in the hands of my baby boy.) You only need some origami papers 15x15 cm and a LED light garland to make this. 

Fold the origami cubes using the water balloon technique, blow it open and just push the lightbulb through the blowing hole. In my home these have remained well in one piece unless they've ended up to the hands of small children.

Kinkkukiusaus - A ham & potato casserole

Tein tässä yhtenä päivänä kinkkukiusausta. Nelivuotiaani tuli auttamaan. Seuraava keskustelu käytiin ruoanlaittoprosessin aikana:

Poika: "Onks toi ananas?" (Näki kinkkupalan muhkuraisen kyljen)

Minä: "Ei. Se on kinkkua."

Poika:"Onks noi ranskaloita?"

Minä: "Ei, ku tää on perunasipulisekoitusta."

Poika: "Yyyyy sä laitat jotain pahaa suolaa!!! Mä en syö tota!"

Minä: "Tää on mustapippuria. Ihan tavallinen mauste. Aina ennenki oon laittanu."

Poika: "Mitä ihanaa sä nyt laitat?"

Minä: "Ruokakermaa."

Poika: "Mitä toi valkonen peruna on?"

Minä: "Se on juustoraastetta."

Tässä vaiheessa poika poistuu keittiöstä. Palaa kohta juoksujalkaa halaamaan minua ja sanoo "Äiti mä en kuole!"

Siis vähän alkaa epäilyttää omat ruoanlaittotaidot?!?



The other day I was making a ham and potato casserole (I don't know the exact translation). My four-year-old came to help me with it. The following dialog took place during cooking:

The boy: "Is that a pineapple?" (He saw the lumpy side of the piece of ham I was cutting.)

Me: "No. It's ham."

The boy: "Are those french fries?"

Me: "No. These are potato slices and onion."

The boy: "Ewww!!! You're putting some kind of bad salt in it! I'm not eating that!"

Me: "That is black pepper. Just an ordinary seasoning. I use it all the time."

The boy: "What's that lovely thing you're putting now?"

Me: "It's cooking cream."

The boy: "What's that white potato?"

Me: "It's grated cheese."

At this point the boy leaves the kitchen. Soon he returns running, hugs me and says "I'm not dying mom!"

I'm starting to question my cooking skills.

I didn't manage to take a picture of the whole casserole, but here is the rest of it.

Tää ohje on meijän jättijengille. Kannattaa puolittaa määrät, jos tekee n. nelihenkiselle joukolle.

My ham and potato casserole (4-5 serves)

Ingredients:

1 kg shred potatoes and onions mix

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 

300-350g shred smoked ham

2dl cooking cream

2,5dl cooking cream whit three cheese flavor

150g grated cheese (emmenthal)

Take a wide oven casserole and layer the potato-onion-mix, ham, salt and pepper into it. Pour both of the cooking creams over it and cover everything whit grated cheese. Oven: 225°c for about an hour. Serve with salad.

Iso Talo - The Big House

Olen nukkekotiharrastaja. Tää on mun juttu. Vuonna 2010 minulle kirkastui, että voihan tätä aikuinenkin harrastaa! Tulin kaapista ja ryhdyin "viralliseksi" nukkekotiharrastajaksi. Olin silloin raskaana ja kaikki luulivat, että meille on tulossa tyttö kun raahasin kotiimme ison talonrohjakkeen. Yritin selittää, että tää on mun talo eikä me tiedetä kumpi on tulossa (ei oo ikinä haluttu tietää, se on niin kiva yllätys). "Just joo... seli seli" oli vastaus.

Sillä ei oo väliä onko mun lapset tyttöjä vai poikia. Tää on MUN harrastus.

Iso Talo on suurin mun nukkekodeista kooltaan ja mittakaavaltaan (=1:12). Se oli meille tullessaan huonossa kunnossa ja oon tässä vuosien aikana sitä pikkuhiljaa kunnostanut. Remontti on vieläkin kesken (niinkuin meidän 1:1 talossakin) ja sähköt asentamatta, mutta valosarjan avulla pärjäillään. Tapetit ovat vaihtuneet jo pariin kertaan ja olohuone, työhuone, kylppäri ja lastenhuone ovat osittain tai kokonaan varastona. Tämä ei kuitenkaan menoa haittaa ja talossa hengaileekin värikästä porukkaa.

Tapahtui tänä aamuna Isossa Talossa...



I'm a dollhouse enthusiast. It's my thing. Year 2010 it became clear to me that this actually can be a hobby for a grown up! So I came out of the closet and became an "official" dollhouse enthusiast. When I dragged a big run-down dollhouse into our home I was pregnant, and everybody thought that we are having a girl. I tried to explain that it is my house and that we don't know which sex we're having. (We never wanted to know. It's a lot more fun that way.) "Yeah right... you're just saying" I was answered.

It doesn't matter whether my children are girls or boys. This is MY hobby.

The Big House is the biggest of my dollhouses in size and scale (=1:12). It was in a poor condition when it came to our house and I've been working with it occasionally for a few years. And it's not even nearly done. There are no electricity there, but we are coping with some string lights. I've changed the wallpapers for a few times and the living room, study, bathroom and the kids room are partially or entirely used as a storage space. This doesn't matter. There are some colourful dudes hanging around.

Happened this morning in the Big House...

Ukko tulee kotiin metsästä.
The guy comes home from the woods.

Hän käy laittamassa hajuvettä...
He puts on his perfume...

...ja menee syömään aamupalaa Pupun ja Hulkin kanssa.
...and goes to have some breakfast with Bunny and Hulk.

Hulk söi liikaa ja hänen piti mennä makaamaan.
Hulk ate too much and he had to go lie down.

Ukko vei jätskinsä yläkertaan...
The guy took his ice cream upstairs...

...and Pupu jäi yksin siivoamaan keittiötä.
...and Bunny was left alone to clean the kitchen.

Remontti on kesken...
The renovation is unfinished...

...mutta silti pormestarikin tuli kylään.
...still the Mayor wanted to pay a visit.
