Polttokuvioituja puulastoja - Etched wooden spoons

Löysin tällaisen mahtavan idean jenkkibloggari Gabrielle Blairin Design mom -blogista. Sitä piti heti kokeilla itsekin.

Alkuperäisissä ohjeissa käytetään Dremelin polttorautaa, mutta koska mulla ei sellaista ole, niin käytin mieheni kolvia. Se toimi ihan hyvin. Tosin sillä "piirtäminen" on hieman hankalaa, koska kärki on aika kaukana kahvasta.

Yllättävän hienosti meni.

En onnistunut polttamaan itseäni, lapsiani, vaatteita tai kalusteita. Nappasin käteeni ensimmäisen lastan, joka osui silmiin ja rupesin polttamaan. Tein tätä työtä keittiössä hellalla, jossa sai myös liesituulettimen päälle. Savua tulee jonkun verran ja lopuksi on aina vähän kalasavustamofiilis. Hella on myös siitä turvallinen paikka, että pienet lapset eivät pääse yllättäen nappaamaan kiinni kuumasta raudasta, niinkuin esimerkiksi ruokapöydän ääressä työskennellessä voisivat päästä. 

Tää on aika koukuttavaa. Kun olin saanut yhden lastan valmiiksi, kaivelin heti laatikosta seuraavaa. Nyt täytyy lähteä ostamaan lisää kapustoja, lastoja ja puuhaarukoita, että voin kuvioida niitä myös joulunajan viemisiksi. Nämä ensimmäiset koekappaleet pidän itse, koska ne ovat olleet jo käytössä.

I found this great idea from Gabrielle Blair's Design mom -blog. I had to try it out immediately. 

Gabrielle uses Dremel etching tool but I don't have it. Therefore I used my hubby's soldering iron. It worked fine. Although "drawing" with it is a little difficult, because the tip is pretty far from the handle.

It went surprisingly well. 

I didn't manage to burn myself, my kids, my clothes or any furniture. I just crabbed the first spatula that caught my eye and started burning. 

I worked on the kitchen stove where I could benefit from the cooker hood. There comes a little bit of smoke and in the end it feels like having spent time in a fish smoking house. The kitchen stove is safe place to do this kind of work because the small children cannot suddenly touch the hot iron there.

This is pretty addictive. As soon as I finished the first one I immediately went through my kitchen drawers for the next one. Now I have to go and by more wooden spoons and spatulas to make some christmas gifts. I'm keeping these first test pieces to myself because they have already been used.

I kept the soldering iron in full power for the whole time. Yet it felt a little bit insufficient.
I guess I have to go and by the Dremel etching tool.

Paperitähtivimma - Paper star mania

Innostuin tekemään paperitähtiä. Aaagh!

Ekaa kertaa tätä mallia kokeilin ja heti lähti homma lapasesta. Tää on ihan hirveen koukuttavaa. Vihdoin hyvä kohde vanhoille skräppäyspapereille. Kokeilin tehdä muutaman myös vanhan kirjan sivuilla. Niistä tuli aivan ihania.

Näitä vaan tulee ja tulee. En pysty lopettamaan.

Pojatkin innostui tekemään. Kahdeksanvuotias jaksoi yllättävän hyvin keskittyä taittelemaan ja liimaamaan.

I was inspired to make some paper stars. Ugh! 

I tried this model for the first time and it immediately got out of hands. This is SO addictive. Finally a good use for old scrapping papers. I also made a few of the pages of an old book. They turned out lovely.

These just keep on coming. I can't stop making them.

The boys also wanted to try. My eight-year-old focused so well on folding and glueing that I was all surprised.

Pieni koristepenkki - A small decorative bench

Ostin Koiramäen pajutallista tällaisen pienen penkin.

Se jotenkin kaipasi pehmustetta, joten surautin yhden heti kotiin päästyäni. Ja pari tyynyä. Tyynyistä tuli vähän liian pienet, mut se ei haittaa. Niille on tilaa nukkekodissa.

Tähän tulee muutama Mailegin tonttu istumaan joulun ajaksi ja sen jälkeen varmaan jotain muuta. Luulen tosin, että toimintahahmot valtaa penkin heti, kun pienin mun pojista herää päikkäreiltä.

Olin oikeassa.


I bought this small decorative bench from Koiramäen pajutalli. 

I thought it needed some seat cushions so I made one as soon as I got home. And some pillows. The pillows ended up a bit too small but that doesn't matter. I've got room for them in my dollhouse.

There will be some Maileg pixies sitting in the bench during Christmas time and after that something else. Though, I think my youngest son's action figures will take over this bench as soon as he wakes up from his nap.

I was right.

Talipallo kahvikupissa - A coffee cup bird feeder

Erilaiset lintujenruokintaideat on innostanu mua ihan hirveesti viimepäivinä.

Tää "kahvikuppitalipallo" on yks niistä. Tykkään tosi paljon vanhoista esineistä ja tässä vanhat söpöt kupit tulee kivasti näkyville ihan uudella tavalla. Ja on samalla vahingossa jatko-osa mun "lintujen kahvila" -teemalle.

Eikun ripustuspaikkaa etsimään...

Kai ne muuttolinnut on jo kaikki lähteny? Etteivät jää tänne ruoan perässä roikkumaan ja kuole kylmyyteen, jos aloittaa ruokinnan liian aikaisin.

All kinds of bird feeding ideas have excited me these last few days. 

This coffee cup bird feeder is one of them. I love old items and this is one way of getting cute old coffee cups in sight. By accident it's also a sequel to my birdie café theme.

Now I have to go and find a place to hang them...

Have all the migratory birds flown to the south from Finland yet? So they won't stick around because of the food and die in cold if I start feeding birds too early.

Neulatyyny vanhasta munakupista - A pincushion from an old egg cup

Mielenterveysnäpräilin pienen neulatyynyn.

Pohjana käytin vanhaa munakuppia. Tää jäi heti keittiökäyttöön.

Mulla ei oo tähän sen kummempia ohjeita. Kankaasta leikataan reilu ympyrä. Ympyrän reunaan harsitaan kiristyslanka, jonka avulla kangaspyörylän saa kätevästi pussukaksi. Pussukka täytetään vanulla.

Tässä vaiheessa pallo kannatta sovittaa munakuppiin. Lisää tai vähennä tarvittaessa vanua. Kun pallo on sopivan kokoinen, sulje se. Sulkemistyylillä ei ole väliä, koska pallon suuaukko jää piiloon munakupin sisään. Pallo ja halutessa koristenauha (mulla tässä pientä pompom-nauhaa) liimataan munakupin sisäreunaan. Itse käytin Erikeeperiä.


For the sake of my mental health I crafted this small pincushion. 

The base is an old egg cup. This pincushion stayed in the kitchen where I use it almost daily.

I don't have any official instructions for making this. Just cut a fair sized circle out if fabric. Sew the loose stitches to the circle edge to make a pouch. Fill the pouch with polyfill stuffing. 

Fit the ball to the egg cup. Increase or decrease stuffing until the size is perfect and then close it. It doesn't matter how you close it because it's gonna be inside of the egg cup. 

Glue the ball and add some ribbon if you like (I used a small pompom-ribbon) to the inner edge of the egg cup. I used Erikeeper (a general purpose glue).

Lintulaudan uudistus - A bird feeder upgrade

Mulla on tällainen vanha lintulauta (mutsi osti sen Claes Ohlsonilta muistaakseni viime vuonna tai sitä edellisenä). Oon alusta asti pitänyt sitä vähän ahdistavana, kun se on ollut niin synkkä ja suunitellut sen maalausta. Vihdoin iski kipinä hoitaa tää projekti.

Me maalattiin meidän talo viime kesänä ja ajattelin, että ois kiva jos tää pikkumökki olis saman värinen. Maaleja jäi jonkin verran yli ja niitä oli kiva päästä hyödyntämään. Sitä paitsi lintulauta kestää nyt paremmin säiden armoilla, kun se on maalattu kunnon talomaaleilla.

Oon tosi tyytyväinen valoisaan lopputulokseen. Miks en tehny tätä jo aiemmin?


I have this old bird feeder (my mom bought it from Claes Ohlson last year or the year before). From the very beginning it's been oppressive because it was so gloomy and I've been planning to repaint it. Finally I got the spark to grasp this project.

We painted our house last summer and I thought it would be nice if this little cottage was the same color. We have some left-over paint and it is nice to be able to use that now. Besides, the bird feeder is more durable for the weather now when it's painted with real house paint.

I'm very pleased with the bright result. Why didn't I do this earlier?

The lights are just photograph-props-cuteness. Those string lights are not for outdoor use.
I also don't know what the birds would think about them really.
