Itse tehtyjä joululahjoja - Self-made Christmas presents

Nyt kun joululahjat on jo annettu, niin voin näyttää teille kuvia muutamista itse tekemistäni lahjoista. Valtaosa on ommeltuja juttuja.

Tänä vuonna en poikkeuksellisesti neulonut yhtään sukkaa (paitsi muutaman minisukan nukkekotiin).


Now when all of the Christmas gifts have been given I can show you some presents that I made myself. Most of them are made by sewing. 

This year I didn't knit any socks which is unusual. Okay, a few miniature socks for the doll house.

Meidän perheen joulutunnelmia - Our Christmas vibes

Tässä vähän meidän joulutunnelmia.

Aika vähän tuli kuvattua, koska kaikki energia on mennyt tän härdellin pyörittämiseen. Pojat oli aivan villinä ennen joulua, mutta niin on varmaan olleet lapset ympäri maailmaa. Nyt alkaa onneksi vähän rauhoittua.

Meidän poikien hittilahjoja oli tänä vuonna Taikahiekka, Play dough, robottikoira ja akryylipallo (kontaktijonglööraukseen). Pienin pojista toivoi pelkästään Hulk-juttuja ja siinä olikin mulla haastetta. Niitä ei nimittäin ole kauhean paljon tarjolla (tai sitten olivat niin tyhmiä, etten halunnut niitä meille). Onneksi löysin Play dough Hulk -pakkauksen, joka on nyt pojan ihan ehdoton lempilelu. Tein myös itse lahjaksi Hulk-pehmolelun. Siitä lisää myöhemmässä päivityksessä.

Jouduin jo määräämään, ettei sitä saa ottaa unikaveriksi, koska irtoava pää putosi ensimmäisenä yönä pojan sängystä ja kieri makuuhuoneen nurkkaan piiloon. Huuto oli hirveä, eikä päätä löydetty kuin vasta aamulla.

Me ei annettu lapsille mitään "digilahjoja", koska en halua ruokkia tätä pelivimmaa, joka nykyään vallitsee.


Here are some pictures of our Christmas. 

I didn't take so many because all my strength was used keeping this hullabaloo together. The boys were completely mad before Christmas but I assume all the kids around the world must have been too. Luckily they are starting to calm down now.

Our boys' favorite presents this year were Kinetic sand, Play dough, robot dog and an acrylic ball (for contact joggling). Our youngest boy wished only for Hulk stuff and that was a difficult task for me. There aren't much Hulk stuff in stores here in Finland (or they are so horrible that I don't want them in our house). Luckily I found this Play dough Hulk set and it was a huge success. I also made a soft toy Hulk for him (about that in a later post).

I already had to rule that he's not allowed to take it in the bed with him. You see, I made that mistake in the first night. In the early hours of the morning the Play dough Hulk's head can (that comes of) fell out of his bed and rolled to the corner of our bedroom. The crying was monstrous and we didn't find the head until later that morning.

We didn't give our boys any "digital" gifts because I don't want to feed this video game insanity that's going on nowadays.

Piparikaupunki purkissa - A gingerbread town in a jar

Tässä on kiva itse tehty tuliainen. Tai piparitalon korvike, jos ei jaksa ruveta vääntämään taloa ja lapset kimputtaa sellaista.

Tällainen piparikaupunki purkissa on helppo tehdä. Mulla on yksi talon muotoinen piparimuotti, jolla on tehty talo, jossa on savupiippu. Kaikki muut talot on vaan leikattu veitsellä taikinasta. Kerrostalo on kaikista helpoin. Leikataan vaan pieni suorakaiteen muotoinen pala. Kivet tehdään pyörittämällä pieniä palloja taikinasta. Pallot lässähtää uunissa kiven muotoisiksi.

Annetaan talojen ja kivien jäähtyä ja koristellaan ne. Ikkunat ja ovet tehdään kuorrutteella.

Purkin pohjalle laitetaan sokeria ja tökätään koristellut talot sokeriin pystyyn. Itse siivilöin päälle vielä vähän tomusokeria, että sain katoille lunta. Sitten vaan koristenauha ja kortti.


This is a nice self-made Christmas gift. It can also be an easy surrogate for a gingerbread house if you don't have the strength to make one and your kids keep asking for it.

This gingerbread town in a jar is easy to make. I've got one house shaped cookie cutter which I used to make the house with a chimney. All the rest of the houses are made just by cutting them out of the dough with a knife. The apartment house is the easiest one to make by just cutting a small rectangle shaped piece. The stones are made simply by rolling small balls of the dough. They fall flat and get stone-shaped in the oven.

One lets the houses and stones to cool down and decorates them. Then uses icing to make the windows and doors.

Then some sugar is added into the glass jar and the decorated houses are laid on the sugar. I sprinkled some powdered sugar on top of everything to get some "snow" on the roofs. Then all it needs is a ribbon and a card.

Piparitalo Amsterdamin hengessä - A gingerbread house in the spirit of Amsterdam

Yritän joka vuosi tehdä erilaisen piparitalon.

Siitä on tullut meidän perheessä jo perinne ja lapsista on hauskaa osallistua ideoimiseen. Välillä tähän liittyy jotain uusia tekniikkakokeiluita. Viime vuonna tein kirkon, koska halusin kokeilla värilasien tekemistä. Siitä tulikin tosi hieno, kun sinne sisään laittoi valosarjan.

Meillä on ollut mm. muumitalo, linna, nukkekoti (kaksikerroksinen... hoitokoira söi sen), majakka (jonka huipulle pystyi laittamaan tuikun), kerrostalo, puumaja, saluuna, autokorjaamo, ambulanssi ja paljon tavallisia pikkutaloja.

No nyt oli pää ihan tyhjä. Ei kertakaikkiaan mitään ideaa.

Lisäksi täytyy huomioida sijoitus. Meillä piparitalon säilyttäminen on aikamoinen ongelma, koska jos sen laittaa jollekin pöytätasolle, se joutuu välittömään tuhoon. Talon pitää mahtua mahdollisimman pienelle pinta-alalle, että sitä voi säilyttää korkealla. Joten, kun yksi pojistani ehdotti, että tehdään taas kerrostalo, olin tosi ilahtunut.

Näin Pinterestissä aivan ihanan piparitalon ja ajattelin, että siitä olisi kiva tehdä oma versio. Siitä tuli jotenkin Amsterdam mieleen. Amsterdamissa on aivan ihania taloja ja katselin niiden kuvia saadakseni vähän lisää inspiraatiota. Pian kaavat alkoivat hahmottua päässäni.

Jee! Näyttävä talo, joka menee pieneen tilaan. Lisäksi ajattelin pääseväni helpolla, kun koristelen vaan julkisivun.

Tää idea vei mut ihan mennessään. Rupesi tulemaan ristikkoikkunoita, kukkalaatikoita ja ranskalainen parveke. Risrikkoikkunat tulivat myös talon taakse ja sivuille. En malttanut jättää takaosaa vähemmälle huomiolle. Lisäksi tuntui, että talo on vähän yksinäinen ja niin tein viereen myös pienemmän talon.

Ja lopulta tuli lennossa myös muutama katulamppu ihan vaan käsivaralla taikinasta leikaten. Tein talojen taakse vähän isommat aukot, että niistä saa laitettua ledituikut valaisemaan taloja sisäpuolelta. Ne näyttävät itseasiassa vähän porttikongeilta tai autotalleilta.

Vähän loppui voimat kesken taloja tehdessä, enkä jaksanut tehdä pienempään taloon ristikkoikkunoita, mikä nyt jälkeenpäin vähän harmittaa. Se oli tosi hektistä hommaa. Pojat leipoi samaan aikaan pipareita, kun piirsin kaavoja ja lisäksi vielä vahtiminen, ettei kukaan syö "vahingossa" talon valmiita osia.

Piilotin valmiit osat pellillä jääkaapin päälle. Lisäksi pojat osallistui innoissaan koristeluun syömällä kuorrutetta ja karkkeja.

Sitä aina itsekin hämmästyy, kun saa talon valmiiksi. Tekeminen on niin valtava härdelli. Talot vateineen mahtuu kivasti kaapin päälle ja kuparilankainen valosarja näyttää kivalta niiden ympärillä. Kokeilin ledituikkuja talojen sisään, mutta ne näyttivät jotenkin vihertävän kelmeiltä, joten otin ne pois.

Meidän teinin (poika 16v.) kommentti esittellessäni luomukseni oli "ai". Tähän sopis vedet silmissä naurava hymiö.


I try to make a different kind of gingerbread house every year. 

It has became a tradition in our family and the kids are having fun throwing ideas. 

Sometimes these projects involve some new technique experiments. Last year I made a church just because I wanted to try out making color glass windows. It turned out really nice when I put a string lights inside.

We've had a Moomin house, a castle, a dollhouse (two-stored... a dog ate it), a light house (you could put a tea light on top of it), an apartment house, a tree house, a saloon, a garage, an ambulance and lots of small houses.

Now my head was totally empty. No ideas whatsoever. 

I also have to consider where I'm gonna keep it. Getting a gingerbread house to actually last in our house is a big problem. If I put it on a table top, it's gonna get destroyed in a matter of minutes. The house must fit in as small area as possible. Then I can keep it somewhere up high. 

So when one of my boys suggested that we could make an apartment house again I was very pleased.

I saw this really cute gingerbread house in the Pinterest and I thought it would be fun to make my own version of it. It somehow made me think of Amsterdam. There are lovely houses in Amsterdam and I watched pictures of them for more inspiration. Soon the patterns started to take shape in my head. Yay! Showy house that fits into small space. In addition, I thought that making it would be easy because I only have to decorate the facade.

This idea took me over. 

There began to come lattice windows, flower boxes and a French balcony. I also made lattice windows to the sides and the backside. I couldn't leave the backside of the house with less attention. 

It felt like this house was gonna be kinda lonely so I made a little friend next to it. In the end I also made a few street lights just by cutting them out of the dough without any patterns. And to the backsides of the houses I made bigger holes so that I could put LED-tealights into the houses. They actually look like garage doors or gateways.

I got a little exhausted making these houses and I didn't have the strength to make a lattice windows to the smaller house, which I regret a little bit now. It was really hectic. The boys were baking gingerbread cookies at the same time I was drawing the patterns and on top of that I had to supervise that no one doesn't eat any house parts that are done "by accident". I hid all the house parts on top of our refrigerator. And then the boys helped me with decorating by eating candies and the icing.

I managed to surprise myself again by getting the houses done. The making process is always such a hullabaloo. The houses and the platter fit nicely on top of our dining room cabinet and a thin copper wire string light looks nice around them. The LED-tealights were greenish and pallid so I took them off.

Our teenager's (16-years-old) comment when I showed him these houses was "oh". LOL
